fascinating read...i think it is worrisome that the only response for why we need the same level of spending are vague concepts like "maintaining power" or "protecting our interests" or even worse simply not "overseeing the "decline" of our military." Seems like a ton of self serving people stepping in here to protect their own budgets. Over extension of forces is a key driver across histroy of ruining a prosperous country (see Napoleon) by driving massive debt. The reality is much of our debt now is DIRECTLY resulting from over extension of military. Our power isn't supposed to derive from force but instead ideals.
